At this point it seems like the differences among the host of city-building strategy games on the App Store come down to mere aesthetics. Do you like your strategy with castles, knights, and rote fantasy trappings? Pick up your sword and frolic in the Kingdoms of Camelot. Prefer your strategy narrated by steampunk women clad in leather and brass? Then by all means, go play Arcane Empires. And you folks in the back--do you like your strategy to unfold in a post-apocalyptic universe where gas-masked thugs lord over the ruins of Western civilization? Then Downfall: Clash of Factions might be for you.

The major critique with sports games is the lack of change from one year to the next. Bugs from one year often appear in the future installments, and poorly-built features receive no modifications for the next season. Then, there's Baseball Superstars 2013. The newest installment in the series doesn't just learn from its previous mistakes - it makes extra adjustments that improve the experience.

Anyone familiar with the collectible card battle game genre will feel right at home with Pantheon the Legends. You'll complete "quests" to collect virtual cards representing gods, heroes, and other mythological figures from ancient Greece, enhance and ascend them, assemble treasures and, of course, battle your fellow players for fame, fortune, and bragging rights. In most ways it's very much like other games in the CCG milieu, but it also adds a few new ideas to the mix and that makes it worth a second look.

You can file this story under Bummer Ways to Start the Week. Ngmoco is shutting down We Rule, GodFinger All-Stars, Touch Pets Cats, and Touch Pets Dogs 2 on March 31st. Pretty crazy, no? And to make matters worse, the games will be delisted from Google Play as well as the App Store on February 1st - AKA four days from now.

This Game is Witty, Charming, Gorgeous and Nigh-Unplayable:
"Oh good, this is one of those games," I thought to myself happily as I started up Marcus Eckert's Wide Sky on my iPod Touch. The gorgeous, somewhat melancholy music and stark, four-color imagery suggested that this would be one of those charming little independent mobile games that slips into the iTunes App Store quietly and slowly takes over the world. Star Trek Online celebrates two million players
On the verge of its third anniversary, Star Trek Online has good reason to celebrate. In a state of the game post, Executive Producer Dan Stahl says that the title is growing by leaps and bounds: "You may have noticed that more than two million captains are continuing their voyages in Star Trek Online. With sustained increases in daily participation, the game is richer and more alive than ever before."

Stahl looked back over the accomplishments and milestones of 2012, including Star Trek Online's transition to a free-to-play format.

For the game's third anniversary, the team is releasing a featured episode on Thursday that will have a special reward for those who play it between January 31st and February 14th. The reward will be an Ambassador Class (the Enterprise-C model) for Federation players and the Kamarag Class for Klingon fans.

Stay tuned for an on-air interview with Dan Stahl about STO in tomorrow's episode of Massively Speaking!

7 Key Questions To Ask When Taking Your App From iOS To Android

7 Key Questions To Ask When Taking Your App From iOS To Android:
HowAboutWe expected to take its beautiful iPhone app, make a few tweaks for Android, and call it ready for development. Then they read Google's Design Guidelines.
HowAboutWe.com was boot-strapped into life in April 2010 at the apex of the iPhone’s market ascendency. Like rookies (we were rookies) we built a basic web app. No API. No native apps. No real mobile strategy. And yet, in creating HowAboutWe--a dating service in which users post the actual places they want to go on dates--we had built a mobility dream of location-based, on-the-go, high-converting repeat usage. Obviously the “offline dating site” should be the “offline dating app.” We realized this pretty quickly and so began the process of retroactively becoming a mobile-first product.
IOS was the obvious first platform. Like hundreds of thousands of other companies we built a native iPhone app. We launched it with great success; it was the number-one new featured app when it came out, has acquired hundreds of thousands of downloads, is top in in-app purchases, and has usage correlated with our very highest subscription conversion rates. We thought we could take our beautiful iPhone app, make a few tweaks for Android, and call ourselves ready for development. After all, we had seen this pattern from dozens of other highly successful apps. But after diving into design research, we realized this project would be a lot more complicated.

Crytek opens American studio

Crytek opens American studio:
[UPDATE] Vigil Games co-founder David Adams leading Crysis studio's first North American branch in Austin, Texas; all 35 employees are former Vigil devs; studio will not work on new Darksiders.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Crytek confirmed with GameSpot that all 35 Crytek USA staffers are former Vigil Games developers. In addition, Crytek USA will not develop any future Darksiders games, and the company will not be housed in the former Vigil Games office.

The original story follows below.

Crytek today opened a studio in Austin, Texas, marking the Crysis developer's ninth studio overall and its first in North America. Crytek USA Corp. will be led by industry veteran and Vigil Games (Darksiders) co-founder David Adams, who will head up the outfit as CEO.

In addition to Adams, Crytek USA will be made up of 35 others, though it is not clear if Vigil Games staffers are among them or what the company is developing.

Vigil Games and the Darksiders series failed to find a buyer in last week's THQ bankruptcy auction, putting all jobs and the series itself in jeopardy.

GameSpot has contacted Crytek for comment.

Crytek USA is the second studio Crytek has opened this month. Two weeks ago, the company established an outfit in Istanbul. Crytek also has offices in Frankfurt, Germany; Kiev, Ukraine; Budapest, Hungary; Sofia, Bulgaria; Seoul, South Korea; Nottingham, United Kingdom; and Shanghai, China.

Kabam grossed over $180M in 2012

Kabam grossed over $180M in 2012:
KAB_Icon_Rnd10
2012 was another profitable year for core game developer Kabam. The company today announced the year’s gross revenue exceeded $180 million, up 70 percent year-over-year from 2011.
Although the developer didn’t reveal the exact details of its earnings, it did say that it was profitable for the year. In a statement, Co-Founder and CEO Kevin Chou said the company had initially expected 2012 revenue to grow only by 30 to 40 percent; meanwhile, the company is entering 2013 with an annualized run rate of more than $200 million. The company also revealed that seven of its games were grossing more than $1 million a month in 2012.
Unsurprisingly, mobile proved to be the platform with the most growth for the company, based on the success of titles like Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North and the recent high-profile launch of a tie-in game for Warner Bros. blockbuster Holiday film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North, took the No. 1 spot on Apple’s Highest Grossing Apps list for the year of 2012. In 2011, the company’s revenue was coming solely from Facebook, but with the company moving onto open web and mobile platforms, Facebook only accounts for about 30 percent of its present income.
One interesting point to note in this morning’s earnings release was that “Kabam’s average revenue per daily active user (ARPDAU) is eight- to nine-times higher than the industry’s largest company.” Based on what we’ve heard from Zynga much earlier in 2012, that means Kabam is presumably bringing in at least $0.50 in ARPDAU.
As we recently noted, Kabam isn’t slowing down. The company started the year off by acquiring Vancouver-based Exploding Barrel Games, bringing its worldwide headcount to over 500 people.

Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: GO get major ESL tournament backing

Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: GO get major ESL tournament backing:
Prize pot for new competition sits at $300,000--the most money a gaming league has put up for Dota 2 and CS:GO.

Valve's Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be the featured games of the Electronic Sports League…s new EMS One competition, with over $300,000 available in 2013 for Europe…s best gamers. This will be the most amount of money any gaming league has put up for these two titles thus far.

Dota 2 and CS:GO will each have four seasons with four live event finals over the course of the year. The top eight teams at the end of each season will meet at the offline season finals. The first event is being aimed for mid-April, with each game played on a separate weekend, EMS product manager Lari Syrota told GameSpot.

"The EMS One will feature an extensive online season with multiple matches throughout the week, contrary to consisting of a series of large-scale offline events," Syrota said. "We believe that this model will be more beneficial to CS:GO and Dota 2 because it facilitates the growth of these scenes."

ESL's largest tournament brand, the Intel Extreme Masters, currently features StarCraft II and League of Legends for its seventh season. This season was the first that Counter-Strike was not a featured title, and the Dota series has never been chosen before.

"Counter-Strike: GO and Dota 2 were obvious choices," Syrota said. "CS:GO has a strong heritage in eSports, with many of the star players from the old days as well as ambitious newcomers creating a very compelling competitive environment. Yet, it lacked a strong backbone so far, and this is where we come into play. Dota 2, on the other hand, is the successor of the MOBA pioneer, and its increasing popularity proves that it deserves attention from the world of eSports.…

Matches will be played and broadcasted online every week without breaks, with broadcasters Joe Miller and Paul "Redeye" Chaloner behind the microphone.

Details regarding the first teams invited, and how many weeks the season is, will be announced tomorrow on ESL's home page.

Apple Rumored To Be Ready To Release 4th-Generation 128GB iPad

Apple Rumored To Be Ready To Release 4th-Generation 128GB iPad:
Although there's a chance it's a retail- or government-only model, all signs point to the "ultimate" iPad as being available to everyone.
The 9to5Mac website has details of a new iPad. According to the post, Apple is to release a 128GB version of its 4th-generation model imminently. And amid the iOS 6.1's Beta 5 code released yesterday there seemed to be a reference to 128GB devices. Although no details are known about the new model's price or date of release, the report does show that there will be four versions of the "ultimate" iPad (in retail parlance, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions are known as Good, Better, and Best.) These will be, of course, Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + cellular, and available in both black and white.
Given Apple's reticence on the confirm-or-deny rumor front, there is a possibility that this model may only be available for internal use or to government agencies. Whichever way you look at it, however, the advent of a larger-storage version is of course, almost inevitable. Given that the firm's latest version of its iMac--possibly the last ever desktop computer that Apple will put out--then this is a logical progression. After all, it was noted at the release of the firm's Q4 results last week, sales of desktop models were down. Would a 128GB iPad be enough to replace your desktop or laptop, or does the shift toward cloud computing make this model largely redundant for you?
