Book of Heroes (iOS) review:
Book of HeroesBook of Heroes is an iOS game from Venan Entertainment. It’s been available for a while now, but has recently had a prominent marketing push, largely via regular ads in the Facebook mobile app. It’s a free-to-play game that carries additional in-app purchases of hard currency, available now from the App Store as a Universal app.

Apple Beats Nokia In Global Net Traffic On Mobiles

Apple Beats Nokia In Global Net Traffic On Mobiles:

It's bad news for Nokia as the company scrambles to establish a foothold in the smartphone and tablet markets.

Company StatCounter regularly investigates the differing streams of Net traffic swirling though the world's websites in the interests of knowing where the globe's Netizens are and what devices they're using. And January 2013's data contains an interesting surprise: For the first time Apple has superseded Nokia as the number one vendor in terms of global mobile internet access.
The data cover devices like smartphones and other units like the iPod touch, but not tablets (but if it did, it's still likely Apple's dominance of this market wouldn't adjust its position in StatCounter's ranking). Apple had a 25.86% share of the market, over Nokia's 22.15% and Samsung's 22.69%. This comes even as the rapidly expanding smartphone market has seen Apple's overall share slip slightly, despite the fact it shipped more units this year than last.

TERA Rising's cash shop will be delayed

You may have heard a bit about TERA transforming into TERA: Rising and going free-to-play on February 5th (or, as we like to call it, tomorrow). That's still happening: You'll get to log in for free and play for free and do things for free and it'll be just wonderful. However, if you were hoping to drop some dough to pick up things like a mount, costumes, or elite status, you'll be out of luck for a few days.

Valkyon Outfitters, the place where meatspace money turns into cyberspace loot and 1337ness, will take a few extra days to be ready for business. You'll have to make do with checking out all the awesome new content without the benefit of a brand-new costume until the shop is ready to open its doors.

We know it'll be tough, but you can do this. Just wait a few more days to start flinging your money at the game.

Sword of Inferno Review (iPhone, iPad)

Sword of Inferno Review (iPhone, iPad):

Gamezebo Rating:

80

I’ve developed a kind of love/hate relationship with iOS action RPGs over the years. They’re typically fun but have some incredibly dull stories. Or they look absolutely gorgeous but control poorly. It’s always something. Sword of Inferno is no different in that “stuff” holds it back from perfection just like all the others, but the core game is far too fantastic for me to really care about that.

Cannon LAZORZ Rockets

Cannons Lasers Rockets, a free-to-play, cross-platform title by Net Games Laboratory, has been introduced to Steam Greenlight, where it will be subjected to the scrutiny of the community. Net Games is describing CLR as a "PvP/co-op arcade space game" that provides light-hearted gameplay.

Players will be able to fight in 10v10 co-op and 50v50 clan warfare, with the options of hundreds of different ship and equipment types for optimal customization. The game will be F2P with cash shop support, but Net Games is adamant that any stats on items purchase with meatspace money will be on-par with items available in the game itself.

Skip below the cut to check out the gameplay trailer.

Race 4 My Place launches, bringing real world rewards and cash prizes to social gaming

Race 4 My Place launches, bringing real world rewards and cash prizes to social gaming:
Screen Shot 2013-02-04 at 9.11.45 AMLast night, PopRox Entertainment revealed its social citybuilder Race 4 My Place had officially launched on Facebook with Race 4 My Place: Los Angeles.

Although Race 4 My Place is yet another entry into an already overcrowded genre on the Facebook platform, it’s differentiating itself in a major way by offering up cash prizes and real world rewards to players. The other interesting thing about the game is that it’s totally free to play, since requiring users to pay to play a title with cash prizes would turn it into a form of online gambling (which is currently illegal here in the United States).

Race 4 My Place piqued our interest when we spoke to PopRox CEO Mike Gramling at GDC Online in October. When we talked to him, Gramling explained Race 4 My Place would allow users to win things like gift cards, airline flights, movie tickets and iPads, but that there were also significant cash prizes to be had. Cash will come in two forms: weekly and “grand prize” drawings (taking place once every four months). PopRox will pay the weekly winners $1,061 (the average monthly mortgage payment in the United States) and each grand prize will give users the option of a $200,000 mortgage payoff or a $100,000 cash payout. Following each grand prize drawing, the game will unlock a new city for players to start building up.

Social games normally monetize by having users spend money on hard currency, but due to the aforementioned link to online gambling this isn’t a possibility for Race 4 My Place. Instead, the game has players watch video ads in order to do things like recharging energy, acquiring extra goods or hiring people to work at the in-game businesses (though this can also be achieved by inviting friends into the game).

We were able to jump into Race 4 My Place right away, but the game’s official Facebook page notes some users are having issues getting it to launch. Look for our review of the game sometime soon.

Kabam announces Fast & Furious 6 mobile game

Kabam announces Fast & Furious 6 mobile game:
KABAM
Kabam today announced it will develop a free-to-play Fast & Furious 6 mobile game to release alongside the movie May 24. The game will feature various competitive street racing modes with cars from such manufacturers as BMW, Honda, Dodge and Ford.
The announcement comes the morning after Super Bowl XLVII, during which the first trailer for the Fast & Furious 6 movie aired.
Kabam is developing the game in its newly acquired Vancouver, Canada studio, Exploding Barrel Games, which is staffed by developers with experience in the racing genre. Exploding Barrel Founder and CEO Scott Blackwood, who will head the project, previously worked as an Executive Producer at Electronic Arts, contributing to many Need for Speed titles as well as the Skate series.
Recently, Kabam has seen a lot of success in games based on popular movies. Last year Kabam and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment partnered to co-publish The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth for mobile devices. The game became the fastest growing title in Kabam history, becoming one of the top ten grossing apps on iOS in 50 countries in two months. Kabam’s The Godfather: Five Families, which is developed in partnership with Paramount Pictures, is one of seven Kabam games that grosses more than $1 million per month.
