Let’s take a look at China’s $13.5 billion online gaming industry
Let’s take a look at China’s $13.5 billion online gaming industry:
China’s gaming industry is massive, as you’d expect, yet it’s also a lot more complex than you’d imagine. Game consoles have been banned for over a decade, and that was only rescinded a few weeks ago. PC-based MMORPG and FPS games – like Crossfire and Blade & Soul – dominate in terms of revenues they produce. Mobile gaming is still in second place for now, but that will surely change eventually as smartphones proliferate and people get more comfortable with in-app purchases.
This new infographic from the Go-Globe team shows lots of facts and figures on the Chinese online gaming industry right now. Some of the highlights include:

This new infographic from the Go-Globe team shows lots of facts and figures on the Chinese online gaming industry right now. Some of the highlights include:
- China’s online game operators made RMB 82.1 billion ($13.5 billion) in 2013.
- That’s estimated to grow to $16.1 billion by the end of 2014.
- Tencent (HKG:0700), the same company that makes WeChat, is China’s gaming giant.
- Action RPGs are the most favored genre, led by PC-based gamers.

How a new e-sports alliance hopes to eventually create a FIFA-like federation for competitive gaming
How a new e-sports alliance hopes to eventually create a FIFA-like federation for competitive gaming:
If you’re a pro Counter-Strike player, it can really stink when two major events happen on the same weekend. A new e-sports alliance called ESGN is hoping to put a stop to things like that.
The problem is that the regional organizations that run competitive gaming don’t often talk to one another. This can make for a disjointed experience for fans that are trying to keep up with everything happening with their favorite game.
That’s where Clauf is planning to step in and offer some guidance. The Germany-based corporation is in the process of launching two new websites designed to help gaming fans better understand e-sports from a global perspective.

RAPTR’S MOST PLAYED PC GAMES: DECEMBER 2013 — YOUR NEXT SANDBOX GAME IS STARBOUND?
RAPTR’S MOST PLAYED PC GAMES: DECEMBER 2013 — YOUR NEXT SANDBOX GAME IS STARBOUND?:
December’s biggest surprise: The debut of Starbound, UK-indie Chucklefish’s first game, at #5 — even though it’s only available via Steam Early Access.
The Starbound beta went on Steam Early Access in December, and after a huge first couple weeks gameplay hours quickly declined, to a point where the game is currently tracking to miss the top 20 in January. Those numbers could bounce right back as the development team adds content and works toward an official launch, however.
Overall, PC gameplay among Raptr members was up 5% over November.
Note: The Share number by each game represents that title’s gameplay time as a percentage of the total time spent on all the PC games played by Raptr members, and is useful for comparing the relative amount of playtime between particular games.
