Tetris Blitz Preview
Tetris Blitz Preview:
Do you know how to play Tetris? Talk about a silly question, one that’s possibly more absurd than “Do you know how to breathe?” Everyone has played Tetris, including your grandmother, your father, your hamster, and those aliens that invade your bedroom every night and put you in suspended animation just so they can go a few rounds on your old Game Boy cart. After so many ports and revamps, is there anything else that can be done with gaming’s favorite falling blocks? EA hopes so; it’s turning up the intensity with Tetris Blitz for iOS and Android.

WordStars Preview:
One look at WordStars, once you've got past the option to start a new game with friends or strangers and purchase one of four different power-ups, and you'll know exactly what you're in for. The game bears more than a passing resemblance to the television game show Wheel of Fortune, with a big thumb-spun wheel covered in dollars amounts (and the ever-present "miss a turn") and a board covered with blank white blocks that fill with letters as you play. The objective is simple: guess the letters, solve the puzzle, and win the game!

Gaia Interactive launches RumbleKitten on iOS
Gaia Interactive launches RumbleKitten on iOS:

Monster Galaxy developer Gaia Interactive’s newest game, RumbleKitten, is now on available on the iTunes App Store.
RumbleKitten is a free-to-play gesture-based game, set in a Dickensian world where orphaned cats engage in “underground tickle fights” in order to gain freedom from the oppression of local kingpin Daddy Cat. Players must spend energy to engage in these battles against other cats, which requires one to swipe the screen in order to capture stars (as well as boost items) while avoiding making contact with launched bombs. The basic gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of Halfbrick’s Fruit Nina titles.
If stars are missed or a bomb is detonated, players will lose a portion of their health. A fight ends when either a player or their opponent runs out of health.
RumbleKitten monetizes through the sale of in-game currency which is used to purchase outfit items (thereby increasing a character’s “swag”, which helps unlock new areas), purchase premium items and free other cats from Daddy Cat’s custody. Freed cats provide passive boosts like increased health.
The game’s social features appear to be limited to sharing photos of a player’s custom cat outfit via the “Instakitten” feature, which will post photos via Facebook and/or Twitter. Currently, Gaia Interactive seems to be focused on adjusting the game experience, as a recurring message asking if players are having fun pops up and thanks them for their feedback.

Puzzle & Dragons estimated to generate between $54M to $75M a month in Japan, says Japanese press
Puzzle & Dragons estimated to generate between $54M to $75M a month in Japan, says Japanese press:
Japan’s top grossing free-to-play mobile game Puzzle & Dragons for iOS and Android is estimated to generate between five billion yen ($54 million) to seven billion yen ($75.5 million) a month in the country, according to the Japanese press as translated by industry watcher and analyst Dr. Serkan Toto.
The estimated revenue range is based off a financial document for January 2013 that accompanied game company GungHo Online’s financial report for the 2012 fiscal year. According to the report for the fiscal year of 2012, the company saw sales grow 168.8 percent year-over-year to $280 million and operating profit increase 690.1 percent to $99 million.
In January 2013 alone, the company revealed that it saw sales of 8.5 billion yen ($92 million), a 1002.4 percent increase year-over-year. GungHo didn’t provide a platform or a specific game in its portfolio for the figures it saw last month, but that didn’t stop the Japanese press from publishing estimates about the amount of revenue Puzzle & Dragons contributed toward the $92 million GungHo saw in January 2013.
“There is absolutely no doubt in the industry over here that one game only — Puzzle & Dragons — is the main driver behind this growth,” Toto says on his blog.
The three Japanese outlets to publish estimates included Inside Games’ estimate of seven billion yen ($75.5 million), Projetista’s estimate of six billion yen ($64.6 million) and Popular Social App and Game Analysis Blog’s estimate of five billion yen ($54 million. The three estimates average out to $64.7 million, translating to about an average of $2 million in revenue per day from Puzzle & Dragons. In comparison, Finish developer Supercell was reported to be generating $1 million in gross revenue a day from two games — Hay Day and Clash of Clans. Also, Electronic Arts’ The Simpsons: Tapped Out pulled in $23 million in three months.
The puzzle and RPG hybridPuzzle & Dragons, which added moved from seven million to eight million registered users in 12 days, is a puzzle and RPG hybrid game which first launched in Japan for iPhone in February 2012 and in the U.S. in November 2012. In spite of this popularity in Japan, the game still has yet to find a sizable audience here in the States, though it’s already starting to see similar titles appear in North America like Renren’s new puzzle game Merlin’s Rage.
GungHo, known for hosting the servers for massively multiplayer online role-playing game Ragnarok Online, currently has a market cap of $2.9 billion, more than Zynga’s $2.5 billion and GREE’s $2.8 billion, but well below DeNA’s $3.6 billion market cap.

Activision Lays off About 30 People, Saying There Will Be Fewer Licensed Games This Year:
Even the massive money-making game publisher Activision lays off people from time to time, as the company confirmed today that they've cut about 30 jobs from their global work force. Kotaku first heard that the cuts were affecting Treyarch, the studio behind Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but a spokesperson for Activision said that a good number of the cuts were from outside of Treyarch, from the parts of the company involved with licensed games. CMUNE receives DCM funding to build “the next billion dollar gaming brand”
CMUNE receives DCM funding to build “the next billion dollar gaming brand”:
UberStrike developer Cmune today announced a new (undisclosed) round of funding from venture capital group DCM’s Android fund.
In a statement, DCM General Partner Pete Moran says the new round of funding will help it “build the next billion dollar gaming brand for action games.”
Cmune’s free-to-play first-person-shooter UberStrike has launched on both Facebook and the Mac App Store so far, two platforms that (at the time) had a meager selection of titles in that genre. Since then, shooters have started to become more plentiful on both platforms, with Offensive Combat launching on Facebook, Rumble Entertainment announcing it would publish the shooter Ballistic and mainstream shooters like Rage and Borderlands 2 coming to the Mac App Store.
Shooters on mobile devices aren’t exactly new, however, and upcoming titles like ngmoco’s The Drowning and Madfinger Games’ Dead Trigger show how tablets can deliver console-like game experiences. That said, Cmune has built a name for itself by catering to platforms that were largely overlooked when it came to games for core players. Since UberStrike launched on the Mac App Store, though, the game’s garnered over a million downloads and the Facebook version is in the 1 million MAU tier.
According to Cmune CTO Shaun Lelacheur Sales, UberStrike’s success on Facebook and Mac means the company’s tablet games will be “tremendous.”

My New Girlfriend is a Space Pirate:
I think what I love most about Sela the Space Pirate is her unwavering courage in the face of overwhelming odds. APB: Reloaded dev blog talks optimization:
Filed under: Game mechanics, MMO industry, News items, Free-to-play, All Points Bulletin, Crime, Dev Diaries
Devs say the darndest things. In APB: Reloaded's latest dev blog, optimization of the live game is likened to changing your car's oil while speeding along at 65 mph. While not an admission of actually attempting the latter, this fact-filled dev diary does get into the nitty gritty of the optimization process; it offers a view (literally, with graphs and pictures) of both the software and hardware optimizations that are in the works.
A new OTW (Open Test World) called Overkill will soon come online to test a new bit of hardware developed specifically for the game to help improve performance. Those who are current OTW testers can expect to see Overkill in the next two weeks, while all players can expect to see release 1.10.2, with its performance improvements, very soon.
If you want to see exactly what is being done to improve your FPS in game, this is the blog to read.
