Almost the Wipeout-Style Futuristic Hovercar Racer the iPhone Has Been Waiting For:

January 4: 5 Lessons Microsoft Must Learn To Compete In 2013
5 Lessons Microsoft Must Learn To Compete In 2013:
In November, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer praised the company's progress at an annual shareholder meeting. "We see nothing but a sea of upside," Ballmer trumpeted to investors.
Unsurprisingly, Ballmer painted a rather rosy picture of Microsoft for what was a rocky year filled with risks and stumbles. In 2012, the company faced ever increasing pressure from competitors such as Apple and Google, and its stock remained roughly stagnant despite big changes at the company. While Microsoft would like investors to remember the positives--the launch of Halo 4, a new cloud-based version of Office, Bing's aggressive marketing campaign--they're more likely to focus on some of the bolder moves the company took this year, such as delving into hardware with its Surface tablet, redesigning its flagship Windows operating system, and doubling down on its mobile software.

These are not the lessons the company learned in 2012, but the ones Redmond should realize looking back on such a critical year in the company's history. It's a cheat sheet for how these corporate giants can win 2013.

January 4: Ubuntu OS Comes To Smartphones
Ubuntu OS Comes To Smartphones:
Canonical yesterday launched a smartphone version of its Linux-powered Ubuntu OS. What does this mean? Well, it means that, if you connect your Ubuntu-powered smartphone up to a monitor, you can turn your phone into a PC. And you'll have to get up to speed on a whole new swipe-cabulary--moving your finger from each of the four sides of your screen translate as a different command.
The Android-based OS is currently only available as a file which you can install on the Galaxy Nexus smartphone to replace the existing Android OS. Its interface fills the whole screen and allows users to swipe from all four sides. Canonical is so far staying schtumm on who its hardware partner will be, but with no devices expected to ship until 2014, we've got all of 2013 to find out. Android users, are you piqued by the idea of the Ubuntu OS? Or will you stick with what you've got already?

January 4: Facebook Is Top Social Network In 127 Countries
Facebook Is Top Social Network In 127 Countries:
Using data from Alexa, social media analyst Vincenzo Cosenza has updated his biannual stats on worldwide social media use. And, unsurprisingly, it's Facebook that dominates the show in 127 of 137 countries. Just 18 months ago, Orkut was the top social media site in Brazil, but it has been eclipsed by Facebook, which now counts over a billion users.
Of all the continents, Asia has most Facebook users, with 278 million users. However, it is dwarfed by users of QZone, with 552 million users in China alone. One interesting stat on Cosenza's map, however, is that, in the past six months, QZone has overtaken Facebook in South Korea. Only Russia, China, and Iran, with their own, homegrown networks, seem impervious to Mark Zuckerberg's charms. I wonder why that is?
