Fantasy Rivals Preview

Fantasy Rivals Preview:
Winning at any card game takes skill and luck, but for pure chutzpah, it's hard to top winning by bluffing. The upcoming trading card game Fantasy Rivals has bluffing (or at least the threat of it) right at the heart of its gameplay. This simple yet deceptively deep game is out to have people proving how clever they are on browsers and mobile devices this spring.

Spunk and Moxie Preview

Spunk and Moxie Preview:
Evil scientists are forever fiddling with secret formulas and tinctures, but they rarely get the first batch right. So what happens to the slop that gets rejected? Pouring it down the toilet is a popular option, but only until the authorities start getting reports about fish suddenly evolving optic lasers. Long-term storage is another option, but it doesn’t come without its risks—hence the plot driving Spunk and Moxie for iOS.

Incredibly exciting news for League of Legends players; replays are now being tested in the game! The replay feature is currently only available on the public test realm. Riot has stated that the feature will be in testing for a few months – if everything goes according to plan, we should hopefully see it sometime after.

In a sort of "outside the box" look at a non-MMO with a hefty bit of nerdy goodness. It's got ships, it's in space, and it's full of lasers, rockers, and cannons... it's Cannons Lasers Rockets. The developers over at NetGamesLab talked to us about their game, and why it should catch your attention.

RuneScape is bringing old-school back

RuneScape is bringing old-school back:

Change is awful and we hate it.
There ain't no school like the old school. RuneScape players have spoken, and Jagex has listened: It's time to bring back a touch of nostalgia to the game in the form of pure old school servers, with the exact mix still to be determined. A recent announcement confirms that the servers will be coming back and reminds players to keep voting to determine the makeup of these servers. All voters will receive the first month on the throwback server for free.

For those who want more hard information from the development team, a special live forum chat will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. EST. Players can also begin posting to a forum thread tomorrow to help give the developers some advance idea of what to expect. If you're one of the 160,000 players who wanted to party like it's 2007, it looks as if your wish is coming true.

Grudger Review (Android)

Grudger Review (Android):

Gamezebo Rating:

From the spectacular pratfalls of Lara Croft onward, a certain sect of gamers have harbored a twisted obsession with watching their player characters perish in sloppy clumps of ragdoll chaos. We never meant to miss that leap, of course, and we hurl curses into the wind at our momentary loss of progress, but we are entertained, at least slightly, by the outcome. The developers of Grudger took that theme and ran with it.

Rock Runners Review (iPhone, iPad)

Rock Runners Review (iPhone, iPad):

Gamezebo Rating:

2012 was the year that one-touch running games really came into their element, with numerous developers really pushing the boat out, exploring new and fiendish elements that made previous runners look shallow and empty in comparison. The question is, what do running games need to do to take it just that little bit further and make 2013 the year of the mobile runner? Rock Runners definitely has a keen eye for what the genre requires, especially when it comes to controls and presentation, but it doesn't particularly innovate or provide anything we haven't already seen.

Dragon Storm Review (iPhone, iPad)

Dragon Storm Review (iPhone, iPad):

Gamezebo Rating:

A literal storm of dragons would be pretty dangerous. So we’re lucky there isn’t such a thing, even if the graphics that meteorologists would use to depict it in the 10-day forecast would be pretty cool. The iOS game Dragon Storm, conversely, is a real thing, made by Griptonite and Glu Games as a multiplayer fantasy builder and battle game. It also looks pretty cool, but the gameplay doesn’t live up to the high bar set by its visuals.

Sela the Space Pirate Review (iPhone, iPad)

Sela the Space Pirate Review (iPhone, iPad):

Gamezebo Rating:

As if we weren’t already worried enough about sea pirates every time we go on a cruise, or Internet pirates whenever we post that sure-to-be hit video on the web, it seems that now space isn’t even safe from a pirate’s dastardly influence. Sela the Space Pirate is a frantic top-down space shooter with a serious steampunk attitude, and has you shooting and looting everything on this side of the stars.

Arlo's Adventure Review (iPhone, iPad)

Arlo's Adventure Review (iPhone, iPad):

Gamezebo Rating:

Wizarding can be a rather precarious occupation. The perils associated with being a magic user are nothing short of terrifying when you think about it -- gnarly beasts after you, other wizards challenging you to wizard-offs, all that good stuff. But what were to happen if you lost everything that actually marked you as a wizard -- namely, your powers. Poor Arlo of Arlo's Adventure has fallen victim to just that, and it's up to you to help him make things right.

Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's Foundry foibles:

STO NX 01 Plymouth header
I hate writing about brouhahas in Star Trek Online mainly because they're usually just a passing event that either peters out with time or gets changed so quickly that by the time my column gets posted, everything becomes moot. However, this time around I'm pretty confident that a recent change with regard to The Foundry, the user generated content tool in Star Trek Online, may actually be just the tip of the iceberg.

The Foundry has had more than its fair share of technological nightmares to overcome in the two years that it has existed in STO. It is an incredible tool, one that allows authors to create their own playable content, and yet it suffers from some of the most serious flaws in the game, flaws that became apparent when the tool was used with the intention of getting easy rewards instead of the personal satisfaction of play. So where will the Foundry end up in the future?

Life is Magic Review (iPhone, iPad, Android)

There's magic in your neighborhood. Plus orcs and elves and demons and wizards. You probably didn't notice it with just your eyes, which is where Life is Magic enters the scene. The free-to-play, location-based dungeon crawler turns the earth into a fantasy battleground, allowing you to cooperate with and compete against your real world neighbors for resources. It'd be a shame if their power suddenly went out, wouldn't it?

Level 50 player reviews ArcheAge, sees 'issues for the casual crowd':

    ArcheAge home and garden
If you're interested in ArcheAge but you haven't been playing the game's Korean release client, there's a thread at the AionSource forums that demands your attention. It's basically a review of the game by a level 50 player, and he has plenty of interesting details to share about PvP and safe zones, the legal, weather, and land ownership systems, and the significant role that crafting and resource management play in the day-to-day experience.

The author illustrates several of ArcheAge's extensive non-combat gameplay options, many of which are focused on crafting and gathering. These take a certain amount of dedication, as not logging in for a few days will result in the deaths of your crops and livestock. That said, it is possible for in-game "family" members to manage things while you're gone.

The ultimate takeaway from the piece is that the author is having a great time in an MMORPG loaded with unique features, though he does see "potential issues for the more casual crowd."

Apple TV Rumors Boosted With "High Priority" Job Posting

Apple TV Rumors Boosted With "High Priority" Job Posting:
Another Apple job posting hints that Apple has interesting tech en route.
Apple job postings are one place the usually secretive company has to reveal a few details about its plans, and a fresh one has added some serious spin to the rumors about an Apple TV. It's an offer for a software engineer/manager who will be in charge of a "team of engineers working on exciting new features and functionality" for next-gen Apple TVs. And whereas the Apple TV has been repeatedly called a "hobby" project by Apple execs, now it's labeled a "high priority" one.
More intriguing is the mention of working with "cross functional teams" within Apple. While this inevitably will mean design and software teams, the emphasis here may be that the Apple TV will be a more full-featured device than the simple content-serving set-top box. Given that Nat Brown, the creator of the Xbox, has disparaged Microsoft's recent gaming efforts and suggested Apple could "kill" the Xbox and PlayStation if it brought more features to the Apple TV, this detail is even more relevant. Prominent ex-Appler and commentator Jean-Louis Gassée has a new note that questions Apple TV's future, but we've long suspected adding iOS apps to the TV could be a game-changer for Apple.
