Apple TV Delayed. If It Even Exists. Got That?
Apple TV Delayed. If It Even Exists. Got That?:
Apple's effort to produce some sort of full-fledged next generation television set is only a rumor--albeit a very persistent one that keeps growing as nuggets of news leak out from China and the TV industry. But now Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies, has stirred up controversy in a note to investors saying that an expected fall launch window will be missed, and the iTV has now been delayed into 2014. That's due to display makers LG and Sharp, apparently, and some sort of dustup about Apple's desire for a super high-definition screen at lower cost.

GameMaker: Studio now supports Linux publishing:
YoYo Games today announced its game development software suite GameMaker: Studio now supports Linux publishing for the first time.
GameMaker: Studio is a cross-platform development suite designed to let game designers create titles affordably, with a modular pricing structure. Over the past year, YoYo Games has added support for features and operating systems, including Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 as well as analytics and monetization tools.
Now, GameMaker: Studio will let developers export their programs natively in Ubuntu. According to a statement from CEO Sandy Duncan, this is the first time the suite has supported Linux publishing.
GameMaker: Studio Ubuntu Export can be purchased either from YoYo Games directly for $99, though it’s promised to arrive on the Steam Software Store soon. Ubuntu Export is free for current and future purchasers of GameMaker: Studio Master Collection.

Richard Garriott explains why Shroud of the Avatar is on Kickstarter:
Filed under: Fantasy, Interviews, MMO industry, News items, Crowdfunding
Richard Garriott has been to space, but his upcoming game, Shroud of the Avatar, is not in space. It is on Kickstarter, and according to Garriott himself in a recent interview, that's because it allows him to release a game without oversight. Garriott claims that the unnamed games he's released to sub-par reception have been chiefly the result of publishers meddling with the finished product, whereas the games he has been allowed to finish his way have been classics.
While the game is not explicitly tied to the Ultima franchise for copyright reasons, Garriott sees it as very much being in the spirit of the older games, since Ultima IX ended with the world more or less destroyed. He also discusses influences on the game world's design and how players can switch between single-player and online modes of operation without a problem. If you're looking forward to the game, you can get more details in the full interview.

OMG, Generation teXt: Nearly 40% Of U.S. Teens Own A Smartphone
OMG, Generation teXt: Nearly 40% Of U.S. Teens Own A Smartphone:
Pew Research has just published a new survey on the cell phone habits of American teenagers. While the trend behind many of the statistics it has unearthed won't necessarily surprise you, the sheer size of the numbers may. According to Pew 76% of U.S. teens aged 12 to 17 own a cell phone. Nearly half of these cell phone-toting teenagers are actually sporting smartphones--which means nearly 40% of all teens have a smartphone. Considering that figure was just 23% in 2011, smartphone use has grown explosively among the youth.
Turning to tablets, 23% of teenagers have one now. And thanks to these devices, 74% of teenagers access the web while mobile at least occasionally--one in four teens, meanwhile, say that they mostly access the web from a smartphone or tablet.

Blizzard, MLG, TwitchTV execs speak on rise of eSports
Blizzard, MLG, TwitchTV execs speak on rise of eSports:
Representatives from gaming groups, streaming site discuss "explosion" of eSports during MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, Major League Gaming CEO Sundance DiGiovanni, TwitchTV COO Kevin Lin, and Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey spoke on the "explosion of eSports" at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference recently.
The panel came together after last year's inaugural eSports panel at the conference, which saw DiGiovanni and Morhaime joined by Evil Geniuses Owner Alex Garfield and Starcraft personality Sean "Day9" Plott.
Disclosure: the panel was moderated by Rod Breslau, author of this post.
The four came to talk about the meteoric growth of eSports and competitive gaming within the last year, which saw record-breaking viewership from MLG, as well as Riot Games' Season 2 Championships.
"When we launched TwitchTV, we were at 5 million monthly unique viewers showing predominantly eSports content," Lin said on Twitch's own record-breaking growth. "By February 2012, we were up to 14 million uniques, and now this February we were just shy of 30 million uniques per month."
"On an event weekend, we'll see at its peak 6.5 million people tune in, 400,000 to 500,000 people concurrently," DiGiovanni added. "While we can't relate that directly in a apples-to-apples way to traditional TV, in the 18-24 age market, we weigh out very favorably towards things like BCS games, and ESPN's broadcasts of the NBA and baseball."
A video of the presentation is available below.

Razer Edge Pro preorders shut down after high demand
Razer Edge Pro preorders shut down after high demand:
CEO Min-liang Tan reveals existing stock of $1,300 Windows 8 gaming tablet have been sold out; base model still available.
An overwhelming demand for the $1,300 Razer Edge Pro Windows 8 gaming tablet has forced the company to shut down preorders for the device. Razer CEO Min-liang Tang broke the news over the company's Facebook page this week.
"We've had to stop taking pre-orders for the Razer Edge Pro as the preorders have gone beyond our foreseeable manufacturing capacity (i.e. all stock is sold out for the months to come)," he said. "We're doing all we can to get manufacturing lines up and running so please bear with us. We're doing everything we can to get more units out in the coming months. We appreciate the patience."
The $1,000 base Razer Edge model is still available to preorder, though stock is "very limited," according to Tan. Preorders for both Razer Edge models opened on March 1.
The base version runs on Windows 8 and includes a 10.1-inch touch screen, an Intel Core i5 chip, an Nvidia GT 640M GPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB solid state drive. The Pro model features a faster Core i7 chip, 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB SSD.
Various peripherals for the Razer Edge will also be available upon launch later this year. Most relevant to gamers is the Gamepad controller, which is now an optional feature for the device. This add-on (pictured above) features two controllers with backlit action buttons and analog sticks. This peripheral will retail for $250.
Other peripherals available for the Razer Edge are a keyboard dock ($200), a docking station ($100), an extended battery pack ($50), and a 65-watt power adapter ($50).

Call of Duty Elite app comes to Windows Phone
Call of Duty Elite app comes to Windows Phone:
After launching for iOS and Android, free app now available for Windows Phone 8 devices.

Activision has released the official Call of Duty Elite application for Windows Phone, though it is compatible only with Windows Phone 8 devices. Similar to the iOS and Android versions, the Windows Phone Call of Duty Elite app is available as a free download.
The Call of Duty Elite app allows users to view their in-game Career Summary, featuring statistics like kill/death ratio, win ratio, and current level status. In addition, the app lets users review recent matches, check Clan statistics, and watch Call of Duty Elite TV.
Activision confirmed last month that a new Call of Duty will be released in 2013, though its title and developer have not been announced yet. This game is not expected to be as commercially successful as Call of Duty: Black Ops II due to "increased volatility" related to the upcoming console transition, among other things.

First released first in Russia in April 2011, Dragon Eternity was later localized in English and grew to include players in other countries. Now, the browser-based fantasy game is expanding into another frontier -- mobile devices. In this exclusive video diary, developers announced that the game is being developed as a cross-platform experience; Dragon Eternity will release for the iPad this spring, then Android and Facebook versions will soon follow.
The video also discussed different aspects of the game, such as the newly implemented naval battles and the quests' tie-ins to minigames. Upcoming content in the works includes player battlegrounds and private castles where players can give others quests to each other. Check out all the details in the video after the cut.

If you're looking to get some play time in the Defiance beta, you'd best get a move on. Trion has announced that the final beta weekend for its sci-fi shooter MMO will run from March 22nd through March 24th.
The company is inviting Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users along for the ride, and it is also doing away with Defiance's NDA. Trion's press release says that more specific beta details will be forthcoming in the invites slated to go out over the next few days.
The final beta "will let players explore the Mt. Tam and Madera regions with co-op battles on Angel Island and the Cronkhite Bunker," Trion says. "For Ark Hunters looking to test their might in some competitive multiplayer action, the Freight yard and Observatory will provide opportunities to prove themselves worthy of Von Bach Industries' recruitment."
Defiance launches on PC and console platforms on April 2nd.
