WildTangent expands mobile presence, launches games for Xperia phones and tablets
WildTangent expands mobile presence, launches games for Xperia phones and tablets:
WildTangent continues to make 2013 the year it makes a serious push into mobile markets. Today, the company announced it’s bringing its games to various Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets.
The deal comes as a continuation of the partnership between Sony and WildTangent, which originally was established in September 2011 and saw the WindTangent Games App pre-installed on Sony VAIO computers, as well as the S and P models of the Sony Tablet line.
WildTangent says all Xperia smartphone and tablet owners who register with the games service will receive an allotment of free WildCoins (the company’s virtual currency used to buy and rent games, as well as make in-app purchases). The current list of games includes recent high-profile titles like Halfbrick’s Fruit Ninja and Madfinger’s Shadowgun.
This is the second major mobile announcement for WildTangent in the past few weeks. In January, the company launched its first debut first-party mobile game for iOS, Polar Bowler 1st Frame. That game is available on iTunes for free and is powered by WildTangent’s advertising platform BrandBoost, and we’re told more first-party mobile titles are in development.
Akaneiro: Demon Hunters Review
Akaneiro: Demon Hunters Review:
What gorgeous tedium Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is. This isometric action role-playing game looks as though it were brushed into existence by a watercolor artist, all colorful swirls and sophisticated flourishes. Sometimes, the gameplay capitalizes on this elegance, matching the fluid visuals with equally velvety action. On the whole, however, Akaneiro is unvaried and monotonous, and its rough edges let down the beauty initially on display. Whether or not you spend money on microtransactions in this free-to-play game, you spend a lot of time repeating content, hoping to earn the right to finally see something new. And there just isn't enough depth or diversity to give this repetition any appeal.

Ecol might only be one letter and a period away from something most people don’t care to be around, but T Play Interactive, YD Interactive and OnNet are hoping everyone will want to know what it’s all about in the next few months. That’s because the studios are putting the finishing touches on Ecol Tactics, a tactical fantasy RPG that looks like it might bring back warm, fuzzy memories of certain alliterative console games of the past.

GameStop: Wii U needs blockbuster to spark sales
GameStop: Wii U needs blockbuster to spark sales:
CFO Rob Lloyd says Wii U not performing on pace with original Wii "for a variety of reasons," one being a lack of major first-party titles.

The Wii U has failed to match the sales pace of its original Wii predecessor for a "variety" of reasons, GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said today, noting that a lack of major first-party titles is just one of the factors.
Speaking during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference this afternoon, the executive said the Wii U launch went off as predicted, but interest in the new console has since fallen off.
"We were pleased with the allocation [of Wii U units] that we got through the launch. I think for us, it performed at expectation," Lloyd said. "I think what you're [now] seeing is the interest has not been to the overall level that [Nintendo] had hoped for. And it's not performing like the Wii did."
"There are a variety of theories as to why that might be," he added. "But among them is there hasn't been the blockbuster from Nintendo. So Nintendo I think understands the need to have that first-party software available to drive Wii U sales."
Nintendo has officially sold 3 million Wii U hardware units and 11 million software copies across the world since launch last year.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last month apologized for a lack of Wii U software available. He explained that Nintendo understands the need for new titles surrounding the Wii U launch, but also acknowledged that achieving quality is of the utmost importance.
Significant first-party titles for the Wii U are on the way, including a brand-new Wii U Legend of Zelda game and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker high-definition remake. Other Nintendo-produced Wii U titles revealed recently include new Yoshi, Mario, and Mario Kart offerings.

GameStop to close 250 stores in 2013
GameStop to close 250 stores in 2013:
CFO Rob Lloyd says retailer will also open 60 to 70 stores across the world and acquire 40 from bankrupt shop GAME.
GameStop plans to close 250 stores in 2013, company chief financial officer Rob Lloyd said today during a presentation at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, California.
In addition, the company will open 60 to 70 stores during the year, he said, which is fewer than the company created in 2012.
Lloyd also revealed that GameStop will acquire 40 former GAME locations in France, following the retailer's bankruptcy last year.
"We're using our PowerUp Rewards database to help customers move from stores that we want to close to other nearby stores," Lloyd said. "And closing 250 stores enables us to deal with the very small percentage of stores that are unprofitable, but also to close marginally profitable stores and actually make more money by moving customers to other nearby stores."
Between opening, shuttering, and acquiring stores, Lloyd said GameStop's total worldwide square footage will be reduced by 2 percent.

If you have a cell phone and live in one of a select number of countries, you now have the option to purchase Star Wars: The Old Republic Cartel Coins with just a few button presses. BioWare announced that it's partnered up with BOKU to offer SMS billing for its premium currency.
There are two important caveats to this, however. The first is that it applies only to those living in Germany, France, Taiwan, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, Spain, Australia, and The Netherlands. The second is that the one and only option is to buy 450 Cartel Coins at a time through this method.
At least now some players have the option to hang up on their mothers because there's a currency emergency and a spiffy new outfit needs to be purchased.

Bungie's Destiny confirmed, will be unveiled February 17:
Developer confirms long-rumored name of first game with Activision; studio to officially show off game in five days.

Bungie today confirmed that its all-new universe with Activision is called Destiny. This had long been rumored, though Bungie finally today bluntly stated, "So, our game is called Destiny."
The developer also said Destiny will be officially unveiled on February 17. Bungie recently launched a teaser website counting down to the proper reveal.
Bungie also today launched Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ channels for Destiny.
Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggested that the game will be released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3.
The game is reportedly "quite like Halo."
